This past week, I attended the PONY Softball World Series in Laredo, TX. In case you didn’t know, PONY simpl stands for Protecting Our Nation’s Youth. It’s a commendable organization designed to foster teamwork, builds confidence, and is a great way for a shy child to make some wonderful friends. My son and youngest daughter love playing baseball and softball; each to their own sport, respecively. This blog is about handbags! Why on Earth are you talking about sports!?! Simple, as a mom, I’m somewhat obligated…okay excited to attend these games. I’ll admit, I’m not much of a sports fan. I can see the fun that goes with it. Watching my kids play baseball and softball; well, that’s a whole ‘nuther story.
As a parent, I’m sure I am not the only one to say that they are their child’s biggest fan. There is something about watching a child; not just our own children, play sports that is so great. I think it’s because they play with all their heart to do whatever they gotta do to do well. Yes, there are some kids on teams who will just play half-heartedly for a variety of reasons. Maybe they’re forced into playing a sport they really don’t want to play, they would rather play at home with their friends in a less structured manner, or perhaps there’s stuff going on at home and they are bringing it onto the field and their performance shows. Whatever the case may be, we can see those kids, and all we can do is encourage them to do their very best. Then there’s the beginner kids, the ones who have never played the sport before. They seem lost, and the best thing you can do is cheer them on, hope they catch on sooner than later and cheer them on harder when they do get it. In the tournament this weekend, the latter were not seen here since the girls all had played before previously, and were considered to be All Stars, which are considered the best players on a given team, so they knew what they were doing.
Overall, this weekend was great, with my daughter’s team winning Second Place in 6U (Age 6 and under), for the region. Had they won the championship, it would have meant another road trip, but to Austin, TX for another week of games and more bags being packed. Speaking of bags…….
In looking at what women were using for their bags for the field, I did notice one thing that many had in common: the type of bag they carried. Many of the women who carried a purse had a wristlet that they had brought to the game. I didn’t blame them. I was one of them who also brought a wristlet to the game. In Laredo, TX the air is dry and the temperature could soar to 108°F with a heat index of 114°F like what we had our opening games night, worrying about getting sweaty with a large bag was out of the question for sure! I saw bags similar to the ones below. Comment below what you think is a great bag to take to an outdoor game.
Women’s Small Wristlet by Coach
This bag is small, but it can hold quite a bit! It’s made with a polished pebbled leather, the leather is treated so that it gives the “typical” leather look. It has a top zipper closure, with textile lining. It does come in a variety of colors besides the black one shown.
Dimensions:
Bottom Width: 7 1⁄2 in Depth: 1⁄2 in
Height: 4 1⁄2 in
Handle Length: 11 1⁄2 in
Handle Drop: 5 in
Weight: 3.8 oz
The good: This bag is perfectly roomy for cash and cards as it has 2 card slots and can also hold your phone! Yes, it can hold an Android or up to an iPhone X, or if you prefer, a portable charger and wire. Hey, just putting ideas out there. If you want to use it in conjunction with another bag, it can be attached inside a larger bag.
The bad: There isn’t much else that you can fit into this bag, If you don’t store your phone, then maybe your keyfob will fit. Forget about storing your sunblock in this bag because that needs to be with the rest of the other gear you need to bring, like a folding chair.

Jet Set Travel Double Zip Wristlet by Michael Kors
This small bag can do a big job! It is made of PVC, ideal for all weather types especially for sporting events. This bag has not one, but two zippered compartments PLUS a separate billfold-style compartment for cash and slots for 6 cards! There is even a clear window for your ID. Within that compartment is a space dedicated for your smartphone.
Dimensions:
Width: 2 inches
Height: 4.25 inches
Length: 7.25 inches
Weight: 7.83 ounces
The good: This wristlet is not a wristlet! It’s a mini tote! With all that space packed into such small dimensions, they have worked miracles on this bag! You are not limited to just one or two of your favorite cards, but your 6 needed cards, you have a space dedicated for cash, 2 zippered compartments for change or lip balm (hopefully with some SPF in it), The wristlet strap is also removable.
The bad: If you are looking for a wristlet that only carries the absolute bare minimum: ID, cash, and a card, look elsewhere, because this bag does more than that! Even though the billfold compartment has a snap closure, I would fear because I am a bit klutzy at times, that I would manage to inadvertently open the billfold compartment. But that’s just me and my luck.

Leila Small Card Holder Wristlet by Kate Spade New York
This little bag is for all those minimalists out there! This one is also leather, so it will hold up nicely. The Warmbeige appears to be the best selling color for this model in Amazon. It is a pebbled leather, made intentionally to to have the little bumps and dips. This wristlet easily holds 2 credit cards, has an ID window, and one zippered compartment, enough to fit a few bills and maybe some coins to spare. Bonus: it also includes 1 slit pocket.
Dimensions:
Width: 0.65 inches
Height: 3.5 inches
Length: 4.5 inches
The good: If you are looking for something that will only allow you to pack your ID, a credit card or two and some cash, look no further, this is the wristlet you have been looking for! I really like that it does have the zippered compartment, which I think makes it easy to stash cash and a little bit of change, and yet still be cute and stylish while being quite functional.
The bad: The fact that the zippered compartment is quite narrow and doesn’t allow for more than a few bills at a time comfortably. I could see this bag being used not only for a sporting event, but maybe even at a theme park. At a theme park you most likely won’t be taking lots of small bills, but larger bills ($20, $50, $100), and more often more than 1 at a time. Change will need to be made into smaller bills. The concern is will it all fit, especially if this is the one wallet you had your heart set on using since it will take up the least amount of space. It’s really not a bad bag at all, just be mindful of how many bills you plan on having for the duration of your outing. Even so, I think this can be a minor issue quickly overcome with proper planning (and a little spending too!) *wink, wink*

To Sum(mer) it up,
It all really depends what you are looking for in a wristlet. Some provide ample room for a phone and maybe some other small items, while others may only allow for the absolute bare essentials. Naturally, these bags are not exclusively make for sporting events, but for places where you don’t necessarily need or want to take everything but the kitchen sink with your other bags, if you have any others. I really hope these help you in your next purchase.
